Green Team Teacher Stipends

Stipends granted to teachers leading student Green Teams. Teachers participating in the program receive Maryland Green Schools resources and program support.

Grant Details:

  • Total funding available: $20,000
  • Amount of each stipend: $250.00
  • Number of stipends available: 80 (one stipend per school)
  • Deadline to Apply: Rolling through January 2022
  • Project Submission Deadline: April 1, 2022
  • Funds Awarded by: May 31, 2022

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Teachers from Green Schools or teachers from schools that are considering becoming Green Schools.*
  • Must lead a youth Green Team.
  • Can teach any grade or subject area at a school.

* One teacher from a school will be awarded grant money. If there are multiple teachers working with the Green Team, teachers will divide funds on their own.

Grant Requirements:

  • Confirm acceptance of grant and submit all paperwork within two weeks of receiving award letter.*
  • Attend a virtual Green Leader Training
  • Convene the student Green Team 2 to 3 times during the award period.
  • Have your Green Team create a short virtual presentation that could be highlighted during the virtual segments of the 2022 Youth Summit.
  • Submit completed Green Team projects by April 1, 2022.

Project Guidelines:

  • Projects should focus on expectations for the future, solutions students have initiated and how they are making a difference at their schools
  • Some ideas to get your Green Team started could include:
    • Green Schools strive for excellence in resource efficiency, health and wellness, and environmental and sustainability education. How does your school strive to be green?
    • Environmental justice is making sure that everyone has a fair chance of living the healthiest life possible. How can you help to elevate the voices of impacted communities?
    • People all over the world are working hard to tackle climate change and make the world a better place. How can you be part of that journey?

* Grant funds will be disbursed approximately one month after the grant requirements are met and a project is submitted.


Student Actions and Transportation Funds

Funds can be used for environmental education student action projects or transportation to and from field experience sites or other relevant environmental events.

Grant Details:

  • Total funding available: $28,000
  • Range of grant dollars available: Grant requests can range from $500 - $2,500.
  • The number of grants available: The number will depend on the total amount of funds requested in each grant.
  • Deadline to Apply: Rolling through January 2022
  • Final Report Deadline: April 30, 2022
  • Funds awarded by: May 31, 2022

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Open to any public or private Maryland school, administrators, teachers, classrooms, green teams, and youth organizations, school clubs, or Green Center/non-profit environmental organization.*

* One grant will be awarded per school.

Funding Guidelines:

  • Student action projects should exemplify student voice, involve a classroom, green team, or youth organization, and have a teacher as a contact person who can complete reporting requirements within the designated grant timeline.

Student Action Funds can be disbursed after an itemized list of materials for the project is received. This list should include a date and location for an event/program, description of each item, cost and quantity of each item, and vendor. Examples of items that can be used to supplement the action projects can include (sit pads, trash bags, water quality testing kits, poster board, and other items as deemed necessary).

  • Transportation funds should be used to transport students to and from a specific location and can include the MAEOE Youth Summit at Sandy Point State Park. *

Transportation Funds can be disbursed before a trip date if a P.O. is sent to MAEOE. The P.O. must include the date and location of the trip, and cost. Funds for car travel can not be disbursed early.


Teacher Professional Development Grants

Funds awarded to organizations offering environmental education professional development opportunities for educators in Maryland. This grant opportunity aims to build teacher capacity and comfort in leading environmental education programs by funding the attendance to or development of professional development training or workshops for educators.

Grant Details:

  • Total funding available: $27,000
  • Amount of each mini-grant: $3,000
  • Number of grants available: 9
  • Deadline to Apply: Rolling through January 2022
  • Final Report Deadline: April 30, 2022
  • Funds Awarded by: May 31, 2022

Eligibility Guidelines

  • Non-profit organizations that work with schools and educators in Maryland.
  • Funds are only available for professional development opportunities for Maryland formal and informal educators and must take place in Maryland.

* Grant funds will be disbursed approximately one month after a final report for the professional development has been submitted.
